Custom poster printing for businesses and organisations
Posters are a simple and flexible way to communicate with customers, visitors, staff or the public. They can advertise an event, promote an offer, provide information, support a campaign or add visual interest to a display.
Printmonster produces poster printing as part of our wider large format printing service, helping customers choose an appropriate size and print option for where their poster will be displayed.
Based in Cannock, we work with businesses and organisations throughout Staffordshire and the West Midlands, including Walsall, Wolverhampton, Birmingham and surrounding areas.
What can printed posters be used for?
Posters can work in many different environments because the format can be adapted to suit the space available and the distance from which people need to read the message.
Common uses include retail promotions, event advertising, menus and information displays, exhibitions, office displays, school notices, venue information and temporary promotional campaigns.
Think about where the poster will be viewed before deciding on its size. A poster intended to be read from several metres away will normally need larger text and a simpler layout than one positioned where people can stop and read detailed information.
For displays that need to stand independently rather than being fixed to a wall or poster holder, a roller banner may be another option worth considering.
Choosing the right poster size
Standard poster sizes provide a useful starting point, although the best choice depends on the available display space, viewing distance and amount of information you need to include.
Common poster sizes include:
A4: 210 × 297 mm
Useful for smaller notices and information displayed at close range.
A3: 297 × 420 mm
Suitable for counters, noticeboards, windows and smaller promotional displays.
A2: 420 × 594 mm
Provides more visual space for promotions, event information and business displays.
A1: 594 × 841 mm
A popular larger format for advertising, events and displays where the message needs greater visibility.
A0: 841 × 1189 mm
Useful when you need a large poster with strong visibility and have sufficient display space.
If you are unsure which size to choose, tell us where the poster will be displayed and roughly how far away people will be when viewing it. We can help you consider an appropriate format.
Posters or rigid printed boards?
A poster is not always the right format.
Where a display needs more rigidity, needs to stand without being placed inside a poster frame, or will be used in a situation where a board is more practical, a rigid printed material may make more sense.
For example, Foamex printing provides a rigid board option for many indoor displays and suitable signage applications.
For temporary outdoor boards and event signage, Correx printing may also be worth considering.
The important point is to choose the material around the way the finished print will actually be used rather than simply choosing the largest available size.
Artwork for large format poster printing
Good artwork becomes particularly important as the finished print size increases.
Logos, text and other graphic elements need to remain clear at the required dimensions. Photographs and other raster images also need sufficient resolution for their intended printed size and viewing distance.
A file that looks sharp on a phone or computer screen will not necessarily reproduce well when enlarged substantially.
PDF is often a useful format for supplying completed print artwork, although the best file depends on how the artwork has been created.
If you are unsure about your files, our best file types for printing guide explains the differences between common artwork formats.
You can also read our vector vs raster artwork guide if you are unsure whether a logo or image can be enlarged successfully.
Printmonster can check supplied artwork before production and advise if there is an obvious issue that needs addressing.
Designing a poster that is easy to read
A poster does not need to contain every detail about your business, event or promotion.
In many situations, a clear headline, important information, recognisable branding and an obvious next step will communicate more effectively than a crowded design.
Consider what someone needs to understand first. That might be an event name, date, offer, direction, product or short message.
Text size and contrast also matter. Important information should be easy to distinguish from supporting details, particularly when the poster will be viewed from a distance.
If you need help creating or preparing your layout, Printmonster also provides artwork and design support.
When a banner might work better
Posters work well for many fixed displays, but some applications require a different large format product.
For larger temporary promotions, events, fences or areas where a flexible display is more practical, consider our banner printing service.
Choosing between a poster, banner, rigid board or another display material depends on where it will be positioned, how it will be supported and the conditions it is likely to encounter.
If you are not sure, you do not need to decide before contacting us. Explain how and where you intend to use the print and we can discuss the available options.
What to send us for a poster printing quote
To help us understand what you need, send as much of the following information as you have:
• Required poster size or approximate dimensions
• Quantity
• Where the posters will be displayed
• Whether they are intended for indoor or outdoor use
• Your artwork, if it is already prepared
• Any relevant timescale
You do not need to understand print terminology before getting in touch. If you only know where the poster is going and what you need it to achieve, start with that.
poster Printing FAQ
What sizes can you print posters in?
Common poster sizes include A4, A3, A2, A1 and A0. If you need another size, send us the dimensions and we can advise on the available options.
What artwork should I send for poster printing?
A print ready PDF is often a useful option, although the right format depends on the artwork. Logos and graphics should be suitable for enlargement, while photographs need enough resolution for the intended print size. If you are unsure, send us your file and we can take a look.
Can you help with my poster artwork?
Yes. Printmonster provides artwork and design support for suitable print projects. You can send an existing design for checking or discuss the design help you need.
Are posters suitable for outdoor use?
That depends on the material, how the poster will be displayed and the conditions it will encounter. Tell us where you plan to use it and we can advise whether a poster is appropriate or whether another large format material would be a better choice.
Should I choose a poster, Foamex board or banner?
It depends on how the print will be displayed. Posters are useful for many flat displays and poster holders. Foamex provides a rigid board, while banners provide a flexible large format option. Tell us where the finished print is going and we can help you compare them.
Need posters for your business, promotion or event?
Send Printmonster your required size, quantity, artwork and details about where the posters will be used. If you are unsure about any of those details, tell us what you are trying to achieve and we can help you work through the options.
