Printmonster produces A5 folded cards for Gillian Whitehouse using wildlife photography from her family collection. The cards form part of a wider story of art, photography and the Low Abbey studio gallery near Bowness on Solway.
Art on the edge of the Solway Firth
The story behind this print project begins at Low Abbey, close to the Solway Firth.
Around 40 years ago, Gillian’s parents, John and Judith Rogers, moved to the area to live close to the Solway estuary, its wildlife and the nearby Lake District.
The landscape became an important part of their lives and creative work.
John Rogers was an established professional fine artist who had trained at York School of Art before working in an architectural office in York.
His paintings were inspired by the landscape around him, including expansive skies, sea, marshland and mountains.
He was also one of the early members of the RSPB, reflecting the family’s long standing interest in the wildlife and environment of the area.
Judith Rogers developed her own creative connection with the Solway through photography.
She became particularly interested in wildlife photography around the Campfield reserve and the surrounding landscape.
Their daughter Gillian has since continued the family’s creative tradition.
Continuing the family tradition at Low Abbey
Gillian Whitehouse established her studio and gallery in her late father’s former studio at Low Abbey.
Like her father, Gillian takes inspiration from the Solway and the Lakeland mountains. Her work is described as abstract impressionism.
The studio and gallery opened during 2022 and 2023 and provides a setting where visitors can discover work connected with three members of the same family.
Gillian also participates in art trail activity, bringing visitors to Low Abbey and helping more people discover the family’s work.
For Printmonster, that background is what makes this project particularly interesting.
The folded cards are not simply another printed product. They are part of the way artwork and photography created around Low Abbey can be shared with visitors.
Reproducing the family's work in print
Printmonster has helped reproduce different parts of the family collection.
Original paintings by John Rogers have previously been reproduced as A4 and A3 fine art prints.
Judith Rogers’ wildlife photography required a different approach.
Her photographs were reproduced as A5 folded cards, making individual images available in a format that visitors can buy, keep or send.
Gillian has returned to Printmonster for further card printing as the annual art trail season approaches.
For the 2026 collection, she requested another set using 29 different photographs, with ten copies of each design.
The cards are printed on silk card and folded to A5.
Some images work best in portrait format, while others naturally suit landscape.
Rather than forcing every photograph into the same orientation, the card format can be chosen to suit the individual image.
That helps the photograph remain the main focus of the finished piece.
A5 folded cards for artists and photographers

Supporting the art trail season
The latest collection of folded cards is being produced ahead of Gillian’s 2026 art trail activity.
Low Abbey is involved with two art trails during September 2026, giving visitors an opportunity to discover artists, studios and creative work while exploring this distinctive part of Cumbria.

Low Abbey also participates in the Around The Island Art Trail around Bowness on Solway. The annual trail brings together artists and makers working around the Solway coast and gives visitors the opportunity to explore studios and meet the people behind the work.

For Gillian, the art trails provide an opportunity to welcome people to Low Abbey and share the family’s paintings and wildlife photography in the landscape that inspired much of the work.
The printed cards form a natural part of that experience. Visitors can discover the original story behind the images and take home individual pieces from Judith Rogers’ wildlife photography collection.
The Low Abbey studio gallery can also be visited outside the organised art trails by arrangement with Gillian.
